Tragic news was reported from Old Lyme, CT on December 1, 2016 as a young woman was killed by a tractor-trailer on Interstate 95. The 32 year old mother stopped on the shoulder of the highway to check on her daughter who was seated in the backseat and was struck by a semi-truck. Another passenger in the vehicle and the child were unharmed. Ashley Ferguson was pronounced dead at the scene.
Although it seems a common practice, many people do not appreciate the risks of pulling over onto a shoulder. Always take the nearest and pull over into a safe space unless there is an emergency and if you do have to pull over, call for emergency assistance if applicable versus stepping out of your vehicle.
