Tips for Car Accident Free Driving in Winter Weather

Tips for Car Accident Free Driving in Winter WeatherWeather forecasts are predicting snow for some parts of Georgia this weekend.  We recommend staying inside and watching Netflix, but if you do have to venture out onto the roads, keep these safe driving tips in mind:

  1. SLOW DOWN

This tip may seem obvious, but any type of inclement weather increases the risk of being in a car accident, this is doubly true in ice and snow.  Remember, braking on ice can lead to auto wrecks.  Maintain a slow and safe speed to avoid a collision.

  1. Navigate Hills Slowly

On slick or icy roads your tires can easily lose traction.  Sliding into another vehicle (or watching another vehicle slide in to you!) is more likely on inclines.  Put your car into a low gear, maintain safe distances with the vehicles around you, and take your time on hills.

  1. DO NOT slam on the brakes

It can be difficult to remain composed if you feel your vehicle start to slip on ice or snow.  Rather than slamming on your brakes, slowly let up off of the accelerator and allow your car to slow down on its own.  If your car has anti-lock brakes, consistent pressure, if your car does not have an anti-lock braking system, pump the brake pedal to stop your vehicle.

  1. Always wear your seatbelt and be cautious of other drivers

Even if you feel confident driving on icy roads, others do not.  Always be cautious of your surroundings and other drivers.  You do not want to be involved in an auto accident due to another drivers’ negligence.
